Company History
Formed as Scaffold Inspection Service Ltd in 1991, the company was established to provide an independent scaffold inspection service to clients. The company was a joint venture between scaffolding company SGB, and Hinton & Higgs Ltd which was at the time Europe’s largest construction health and safety consultancy. The range of services soon expanded to include Scaffold Inspection training, the Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme range of skill training, Scaffolding Design advice and lightweight aluminium tower scaffolding training.
In late 1997 Rodney Meere (Director and ex-owner of Hinton & Higgs Ltd, after its sale to Willis Corroon) and Ray Johnson (Managing Director) undertook a management buyout of the Company that was then re-named Safety & Access Ltd in 1998. The Company continued to expand its specialised working at height training and consultancy services to all industries including construction, local and national government, petrochemical, power industry, offshore, entertainment, utilities, education and property facilities.
As part of its commitment to Health and Safety, the company developed its own Health and Safety Management system in line with OHSAS 18001:1999 and in March 2001 was successfully externally audited to this standard by NQA. This registration continues today and is now updated to BS OHSAS 18001:2007. Following on from this, the company started to offer a full Health and Safety Consultancy retained service to clients including introducing the benefits of an 18001 Health and Safety Management to their organisations.
In January 2004 Safety & Access Ltd, in response to increasing demand from clients existing and new, opened a dedicated management training facility at its Nottingham head office and training centre. This provided a self contained unit including two training rooms with a capacity of up to 20 attendees each, with its own toilet facilities and catering/breakout area.
With our Operations Director Rick Statham joining the expanding team in 2007 after spending 15 years as Quality, Health, Safety and Environment Manager at ThyssenKrupp; Safety & Access Ltd expanded its services to include asbestos awareness consultancy training (approved by UKATA), Behavioural Safety Training and Quality Management to ISO 9001:2008. These accreditations add to those already held for Scaffolding training (CISRS), Lightweight Tower Scaffolding (PASMA), NVQ’s (CAA).
Safety & Access Ltd continues to grow and expand its services to all industries and in mid 2009 the Company and its shareholders acquired Independent Safety Services Ltd. This company brings expertise in healthcare waste management, construction waste management plans, dangerous goods safety advisory services, driver safety training, road traffic accident investigation services, vehicle safety inspections, coach tour operators services, display screen assessments and a range of British Safety Council Awards Scheme training courses.
